Keep Our Shores Pristine: Why We Can't Stop at Just One Beach Cleanup

In Malaysia, our love for the coast is something we all can relate to. From the picturesque islands of Langkawi and Perhentian Island, to the lively beaches of Port Dickson, our coastline brings us immense joy, recreation, and beauty. But with that love also comes a serious responsibility, protecting our shores from the wave of plastic and waste that threatens their future.

Every September, we witness an incredible surge in community spirit as we come together for the International Coastal Cleanup (ICC). For 2025, Malaysia's initiative for ICC 2025 is as strong as previous years. With many individuals and groups pitching in to collect heaps of rubbish from our beaches. It’s a powerful reminder of what we can achieve when we unite for a common cause.

However, here’s a critical question: what happens after September?

Sadly, the incoming waste doesn’t just stop. Plastic bottles, styrofoam, fishing nets, and a host of other debris continue to wash up on our beautiful Malaysia shores, remnants of human activity and the currents of the sea. This is why our commitment can’t be limited to just one cleanup. We need to keep participating in local cleanups—whether they’re organized events or spontaneous outings with friends—to ensure our marine ecosystems stay healthy.

What’s even more important is that the real work starts after the cleanup. The waste we collect reveals a lot about our consumption habits. It’s a stark reminder that a lot of this problem begins on dry land. That’s why education is our most powerful ally. By learning about the consequences of the waste we generate, we can make better choices moving forward.

Educating ourselves and those around us about plastic and sustainable waste management is crucial for creating a lasting impact. Here’s how we can contribute:

  • Embrace the "3 Rs": Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle. Can we find ways to cut down on single-use plastics? Can we repurpose items instead of tossing them? Are we sorting our recyclable waste correctly?
  • Learn about proper disposal methods. Not all plastics are recyclable, and many end up in landfills or, worse, in our waters. Knowing how to dispose of waste properly is vital.
  • Advocate for change. We can press for improved waste management infrastructure and policies within our communities.

The efforts we put in during International Coastal Cleanup month are a brilliant beginning, but let’s not let that enthusiasm fizz out. Let’s make every day feel like a cleanup day by being mindful of our waste and encouraging others to join in. Together, we can ensure that our stunning Malaysian beaches remain a cherished treasure for generations to come.
