Empowering Communities Through Sustainable Transformation: The PETRONAS Social Impact Signature Activation Program 🌿
At Impactlution, we’re driven by a singular vision: to create a sustainable future by empowering communities and turning waste into wealth. We’re excited to share the inspiring journey of the PETRONAS Social Impact Signature Activation Program, a six-month initiative from March to August 2024. This program, in partnership with PETRONAS and Yayasan Hijau Malaysia, is a testament to how strategic collaboration can uplift communities, promote sustainable practices, and contribute to several United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including:
• SDG 1: No Poverty
• SDG 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth
• SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production
• SDG 13: Climate Action
Transforming Lives: The Heart of Our Mission
The program focused on three key communities:
1. Kemaman, Terengganu
• Used Cooking Oil (UCO) Upcycling (Women Community)
• Textile Upcycling (Marhabah)
• Plastic Upcycling (Marhabah)
2. Kota Kinabalu, Sabah
• Kampung Warisan
• Kampung Cenderamata 2
3. Bintulu, Sarawak
• Kelab Belia dan Sukan Kg Baru
Our objective was not just to introduce sustainable practices but to uplift these communities by providing them with the skills, tools, and opportunities to generate income and improve their quality of life. By embracing the Waste to Wealth concept, we’re converting environmental liabilities into valuable resources, creating jobs, and fostering community development.
Empowering the Youth and B40 Communities
Recognizing the untapped potential within the youth and B40 communities (the bottom 40% income group in Malaysia), we aimed to ignite a transformative change. By equipping them with practical skills and knowledge, we’re enabling them to:
• Generate Sustainable Income: Through upcycling initiatives, community members can create products from waste materials, opening new revenue streams.
• Develop Valuable Skills: Training in machinery operation, product design, and business management provides long-term benefits.
• Foster Environmental Stewardship: Understanding the importance of sustainability encourages responsible practices that benefit the entire community.
One participant from Kemaman shared:
“Before this program, we saw waste as just rubbish. Now, we see it as an opportunity—a way to earn income and protect our environment.”
Our Commitment to Waste to Wealth
1. Community-Centric Approach
We began by identifying communities passionate about making a change. Through close collaboration, we understood their needs and local resources, ensuring our initiatives were tailored for maximum impact.
2. Investing in Sustainable Infrastructure
To turn waste into wealth, we provided essential machinery and tools:
• Sewing Machines for transforming textile waste into marketable products.
• Plastic Crushers and Molding Machines to upcycle plastic waste into new items.
• Molds and Tools for converting Used Cooking Oil (UCO) into candles and soaps.
3. Education and Skills Development
Knowledge is power. We conducted comprehensive Skills Development Programs, covering:
• Waste to Wealth Principles: Teaching the value of a circular economy and how waste can become a resource.
• Collection Program Workshops: Educating on proper waste segregation, recycling, and upcycling techniques.
• Hands-On Training: Practical sessions on machine operation, product design, and production planning across plastic, textile, and UCO upcycling.
• Marketing and Business Training: Guidance on product costing, branding, social media marketing, and storytelling to help communities sell their products effectively.
4. Setting Up Collection Bins
By installing collection bins within the communities, we facilitated:
• Environmental Cleanliness: Reducing litter and promoting a hygienic environment.
• Resource Gathering: Providing raw materials for upcycling projects.
• Community Engagement: Encouraging locals to participate actively in sustainable practices.
5. Continuous Support and Monitoring
Our journey didn’t stop at training. We offered three months of monitoring and support, ensuring communities confidently navigated their new ventures and overcame challenges.

• Economic Empowerment: Communities are earning sustainable income, reducing poverty levels (aligning with SDG 1).
