On 28th September 2024, during our collaborative beach clean-up with Nestlé—now in its fourth consecutive year—we had the honor of hearing from Dato’ Adnan Pawanteh, the Executive Director of Group Corporate Affairs at Nestlé (Malaysia) Berhad. His inspiring speech shed light on Nestlé’s robust sustainability initiatives and reinforced why our joint efforts are crucial for the environment.
A Strong Commitment to Plastic Neutrality
Dato’ Adnan emphasized Nestlé’s plastic neutrality commitment, aiming for a balance between the amount of plastic they produce and the amount they recycle. Here’s what that looks like:
• Equal Production and Recycling: For every 1 ton of plastic produced, Nestlé is committed to recycling 1 ton of plastic.
• Increasing Recycling Targets:
• In 2023, Nestlé recycled 7,000 tons of plastic.
• In 2024, the target has increased to 10,000 tons, showcasing their escalating dedication to the cause.
Zero Landfill Commitment
Nestlé is devoted to ensuring that none of their waste ends up in landfills. Dato’ Adnan highlighted:
• Waste Diversion: Materials that cannot be recycled are diverted to Waste-to-Energy programs, converting waste into usable energy.
• Innovative Packaging: Transitioning from plastic to more sustainable options like paper packaging to reduce environmental impact.
Ambitious Goals for 2050
Looking ahead, Nestlé has set significant targets:
• Reducing Plastic Usage: By 2050, the goal is to reduce plastic usage and production by one-third compared to 2018 levels.
• Promoting Reusability: Encouraging both internal teams and consumers to adopt reusable products and practices.
Why Beach Clean-Ups Matter
Our joint beach clean-up is more than just a one-day event; it’s a statement of our shared commitment to environmental stewardship. Beach clean-ups help:
• Protect Marine Life: Removing trash prevents harm to wildlife caused by ingestion or entanglement.
• Reduce Pollution: Prevents plastics and other waste from breaking down into microplastics that contaminate our water and food supply.
• Raise Awareness: Educates volunteers and the community about the impact of waste and the importance of proper disposal.
